Stoolball played in Rutland

Sunday 30 September 2007

A stoolball match between the midlands and the south was played in Rutland recently. The teams were mixed, including a number of children under ten, so although the rules were followed the interpretation was somewhat liberal and a soft ball was used for safety.

Everyone enjoyed the game, and even the lady who was six months pregnant managed to score some runs. Between innings tea was held overlooking Rutland Water, and the onlookers asked the origin of the game, which was explained.

The eventual outcome was not entirely certain, other than that the Midlands won and a thoroughly entertaining afternoon was had by all.

Thank you to Ron Dane for letting us know about the match.
